Department of Bioinformatics @ NICAS
Noorul Islam College of Arts and Science is an offspring of Noorul Islam Trust. The Noorul Islam Trust is reputed for its commitment to the cause of higher education. Janab. Dr. A. P. Majeed Khan, the well known philanthropist is the founder chairman of the trust. The trust has to its credit a few popular technical and educational institutions, namely, the well-known. The Noorul Islam College of Engineering (NICE) at Kumaracoil, the Noorul Islam Polytechnic College (NIPC) at Punkarai, the Noorul Islam Community College (NICC) at Kumaracoil, the Noorul Islam Multispeciality Hospital (NIMS) at Neyyatrinkara, the Noorul Islam Dental College (NIDC) at Neyyatrinkara, and the Noorul Islam University (NIU) at Kumaracoil.
The college is situated in the serene picturesque slope of the Velimalai hills in the western ghat near the historically reputed and once the capital of Travancore kingdom, Padmanabhapuram palace. It is about 55 km away from Thiruvananthapuram and 14 km from Nagercoil. The college campus is spread over an area of more than 15 acres of greenery.
Noorul Islam College of Arts and Science (NICAS) was started in 2001 by the Noorul Islam Educational Trust, being affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, and accredited by NAAC with B-Grade with a CGPA of 2.66. With a meagre strength of just 75 students offering three courses, Computer Science, Information Technology, and Computer Applications, the college progressed leaps and bounds by adding new courses and infra-facilities. Currently the college has effective student strength of about 1,100 and offers 13 U.G. courses, 8 P.G. courses, 5 M.Phil. courses and 1 Ph.D. course.
About Bioinformatics Department
The department of Bioinformatics was established in the year 2003, with the aim of imparting quality education in the field of bioinformatics and train students in advancing research areas of biological and medical research including genomics, proteomics, computational biology, bioprogramming, molecular modelling and drug designing.
The B.Sc. Bioinformatics course is the first of its kind in this region. Later M.Sc. Bioinformatics course was started in the year 2007, M.Phil. Bioinformatics in the year 2009 and Diploma in Bioinformatics in the year 2010.
The department lab consists of equipped wet lab and dry lab facilities (academic and commercial software) with high speed wi-fi enabled broadband internet connectivity. Modern teaching methods such as Power Point Presentation, LCD Presentation, Industrial/Institution Training Visit, Guest Lectures, OHP Presentation, Audio/Video Presentation, Remote project/practical interaction through TeamViewer, Webinars, Virtual Class Room, E-Books, Lecture/Practical videos, Online Teaching Material, Online Database/Tools, Bioinformatics group activity through blog/forum/social networks are adapted. Students have access to most of the peer reviewed life science journals. The department students bagged 12 gold medals and 72 university ranks so far. Most of the students are placed in R&Ds, software companies, and institutions/organizations all over the world.
About Bioinformatics Course
Bioinformatics is an emerging, rapidly expanding scientific discipline that addresses problems related to the collection, processing, analysis of the vast amounts of data describing the structure and function of biological systems. The ultimate role of a professional involves studying the risk factors that lead to the development of a disease. They also analyse clinical trails of new medicines before they are released into the market. Due to the sudden increase in health complications and unprecedented diseases, bioinformatics professionals are on high demand as they play a big role in developing new drugs that cure ills.
